Reflections on the CWDC’s September 2024 Council Meeting

Last week, CWDC members, guests, and staff convened for the September Council meeting, held in a hybrid format on September 19-20, 2024 in Greeley, Colo. The focus was on "Advancing Career Pathways and Equitable Opportunity in Colorado," providing a platform for collaboration, insightful presentations, and dynamic discussions around workforce initiatives.

Day 1: Thursday, September 19

The meeting kicked off with registration and networking over coffee, followed by a warm welcome and introductions from CWDC Chair Jonathan Liebert.

Attendees gained valuable insights from a Weld County overview from Weld County Commissioner Scott James, and a local business highlight featuring Alquist 3D, showcasing innovative approaches to affordable and environmentally responsible housing and buildings.

The agenda included essential council business and an update from the Sectors Steering Committee. Larimer County Regional Talent Program Manager Kelsey Baun presented on "NoCo Works: An Aligned Workforce Ecosystem Across Northern Colorado," illustrating collaborative efforts to enhance workforce alignment in the region. The day also featured a compelling session on quantum computing by renowned international speaker, five-time author, and Founder of Infinite 8 Industries Ean Chukwuemeka Mikale, emphasizing the need for Colorado's workforce to adapt to emerging technologies. After lunch, The LINC Library Innovation Center provided an overview and tour led by Executive Director of the High Plains Library District Matthew Hortt, highlighting resources available for workforce development. 

The day concluded with discussions on council initiatives and a focus on skills-first messaging, ensuring ongoing dialogue about effective communication strategies for workforce development. The evening featured a recognition dinner at WeldWerks Brewing Co., celebrating the contributions of outgoing council members. 

  

Day 2: Friday, September 20

Day two began with coffee and reflections on the previous day's highlights. Presentations included updates from the Education and Training Steering Committee and insights into the Weld County Bright Futures Scholarship Program, presented by Senior Program Officer at The Weld Trust Lisa Taylor. A panel discussion addressed community-driven solutions to workforce needs, featuring Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Higher Education and member of the Governor's Cabinet Dr. Angie Paccione, University of Northern Colorado President Dr. Andy Feinstein, and Human Resources Officer of the Yoder Family of Companies Bill Johnson.

Council members reviewed and approved stackable credential pathways, emphasizing the importance of flexible education options for Colorado's workforce. The CWDC staff provided an update on the WIOA State Plan implementation, outlining strategies for the upcoming program year.

As the meeting wrapped up, attendees expressed appreciation for the collaborative spirit and shared learning experiences that characterized the two days. The September Council meeting reinforced the commitment to advancing career pathways and promoting equitable opportunities across Colorado.
