By Zarin Moon, CWDC Project Coordinator Apprentice
My name is Zarin Moon and I am a senior at Thomas Jefferson High School. I am also the Project Coordinator apprentice for the Colorado Workforce Development Council (CWDC), responsible for collaborating with the Career Pathways team in order to develop career pathways for in-demand industries. I’ve been working for four months now and it’s been an amazing experience so far, filled with opportunities for learning and personal growth.
I gained my first professional workplace experience the summer after my sophomore year with an internship as a web designer for Denver Public Schools. This experience allowed me to make a positive impact on my school district as a whole by contributing to their website, and improving communications between DPS families and staff. I loved it so much that I was asked to return for a second term, where I then shifted my focus to assisting the team with social media and marketing.
As I ended my internship however, I was looking to take on more of a leadership role and develop my skills further. That’s when I began to explore apprenticeship opportunities through CareerWise. I initially learned about this program through my friend Luis, a fellow apprentice working at Pinnacol Assurance as an underwriter.
As I learned more, the idea of gaining paid, hands-on experience in a professional environment while still in high school really intrigued me. With the help and support of Ms. Bobrick, the career navigator at my school, I applied to various organizations and was eventually offered a position with CWDC in July.
As soon as I started, I was surrounded by welcoming faces and introduced to a supportive work environment. Everyone is understanding when it comes to balancing my school schedule with my work, helping me make the most of my time. My amazing supervisor, Career Pathways Senior Consultant Thomas Hartman, plays an important role in my apprenticeship by allowing me a space where I can apply my background knowledge while learning and applying new skills.
Since joining CWDC, I’ve already contributed to projects and engaged in work responsibilities, such as giving an in-depth analysis of the My Colorado Journey website, and conducting career pathway team meetings. Everything I’ve participated in allowed me to solidify my skills in communication and leadership. Through it all, I am progressively gaining the competencies needed to earn a certification in project management towards the end of my three-year commitment.
One of the biggest things I've learned so far during my apprenticeship is the importance of hard work and dedication. Although I am still relatively new to CWDC, I try my best to contribute to the best of my ability and take on new challenges. I've also learned the value of asking questions and asking for help when needed. My supervisor and fellow coworkers have been incredibly supportive and helpful in my ongoing process for both personal and professional growth.
I'm excited to continue my apprenticeship, expand my knowledge, and look forward to applying the skills I've gained to my future career. I encourage other students to consider apprenticeship programs as a way to gain valuable work experience and develop their skills. It's been an incredible journey so far, and I can't wait to see what the future holds.
